Findings
Findings revealed the development of a participatory culture within the hybrid educational technology course was based on a number of interrelated factors:
- Professor’s design of the course
- Students' engagement with the content and interactions with peers both online and face-to-face
- Negotiation and tensions between the professor’s objectives and expectations and the students’ desired experiences
Bridging the Participation Gap
_
"The creation of the hybrid environment is not a formulaic endeavor--it is something that is generated together, over time." -- Dr. Danah Craig, Ambrose State
Course design and integration of the online and face-to-face components in this graduate level hybrid course allowed students to become members of a learning community by bridging the participation gap through low barrier activities (Jenkins, 2006).

Tensions and Incongruences in Space and Time
- Maintaining balance between online, face-to-face sessions, and course assignments
- Meeting the needs of students based on the diversity of their technology experiences, professional backgrounds, and educational goals
- Conflicting definitions of community norms and expectations between teacher and students
Desire for Personal Connection
_Karen: And I am realizing this is what I miss. When a facilitator just kind of puts out a question and guess who is guiding it? [In reference to the questions I posed to the group] We all are. So, like, I am hearing your voices more now than I have in any class yet. And that's kinda sad. Like I'm probably going to go read all of your posts now!
(Group laughs)
Gina: We've probably already read your post!
Karen: But now I am more personally connected.
